(Rom. 5.10)…For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life…(The life he now lives. You see, he died on the cross to save us; he now lives in heaven to keep us saved.) (Rom. 5.11) And not only so, but we also JOY IN GOD through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the ATONEMENT.
Out of 77 times the atonement is used in the bible, (Rom. 5.11) is the only place it is found in the New Testament.
So what does the Atonement really mean? The atonement was what God granted to those who broke the law by the sacrifices that they offered once a year for their sins. (Rom. 5.12) tells us that sin entered the world by one man (Adam) and because of what he did we also are sinners and we must die for those sins that we commit. You and I are sinners because if four things:
1) We are sinners becase we commit acts of sin.
2) We are sinners by nature. (Sin does not make us to be sinners, but we sin because we have that sinful nature).
3) We live in the state of sin. God has declared the whole human race to be under the blanket of Adam’s sin.
4) We are sinners by imputation; Adam acted for the whole human race because he was the head of it.
It’s on the basis of this headship of Adam that God is able, through the headship of Christ, to save all sinners who will trust Christ for their salvation and redemption. So what is the bible teaching in the New Testament instead of atonement? It teaches Reconciliation.
See —htp://groups.yahoo.com/group/kushlabethanybaptist/messages/596 — for Reconciliatiion.
Death reigned from Adam to Moses although there had been no law given. After Moses received the ten commandments there on Mt. Sinai, man was condemned by the law and condemned to death because of his disobedience to the law. After Christ Jesus died for our sins we were redeemed by His obedience to the law of God the Father, thereby reconciling us to the Father; by grace are ye saved. We are still sinners by nature but Children of God by the reconciliation of his Son unto righteousness; i.e. We are declared not guilty by justification.
God bless,
Mr. Tommy.
