Opportunity

November 14th, 2009

This must be shared. As a high school teacher, I look for opportunities to share my faith in Jesus Christ with my students, but it takes a certain kind of courage to risk losing your job in order to do this. Courage I sometimes lack. So, I often pray that God will either give me courage or (if not) provide opportunities for me to speak on my faith and my beliefs in such a way that  inspires my students, but keeps me employed.

Today, a conversation started at the end of one of my classes about the new movie 2012. Several apprehensions about the end of the world spread through the room until one young lady asked, “How do you feel about the end of the world, Mr. Lilly?”  My heart jumped at the question, as I knew God was answering my prayer.  I smiled, cleared my throat, and spoke with pride.

“Well, I believe what the Bible says about how no man shall know the day or the hour, only God knows.  I also believe what the Bible says about not worrying about tomorrow because tomorrow will take care of itself.  So I’m not worried.”  What happened next was unexpected.  I saw more smiles and nods from my students than I had seen from any lesson I had taught them.  It was if those two sentences had opened up their hearts and minds more than any grammar or vocabulary lesson.

It is amazing how often God opens the doors of opportunity for us to speak of our faith to others. Even more amazing is when He removes all barriers, both internal and external, and gives us the perfect chance to share our relationship with Him.  I pray that he will give me the courage I need to continue to tell others about the importance of having a relationship with Jesus and that those seeds I plant will grow fruitful and plentiful to bring honor to God.

Praise God! I also have stories similar to this one. It’s so amazing when God causes others to come to you for answers and you have an opportunity to share truth with them. I guarantee some of those students will never forget that day in class! Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing. It really is a blessing to see the Lord work in such amazing ways as they way you discribed. Its ashamed that the world is treats Christians as fools who need to keep their mouths shut. Thank you for your courage and thank the Lord for giving you this amazing opportunity. I pray that the Lord works through this simple discussion to bring at least one to Christ.
