2.) Anger ≠ Power

You know, I used to believe that my anger empowered me.  It’s almost like I thought that I was the Incredible Hulk.  I felt like the world was supposed tip-toe around me cautiously, less they invoke my mighty anger and cause me to transform into a powerful monster!  It sounds comical, but that’s how I was deceiving myself.  In my anger, I would walk around with my fists bald, chest out, and frown on my face, thinking that the world had better stay out of my way!  ”Nobody better mess with me…cuz I’m mad!!”  My anger made me feel powerful, but I was not.  In fact, the opposite was true.

Proverbs 16:32
He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.

Proverbs 16:32 – “He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.”

Proverbs 25:28 – “Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.”

Proverbs 16:32 tells us that it is better to be slow to anger (patient) than to be a mighty warrior and that “a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city (Proverbs 16:32).”  But a man who lacks self control is like a city with broken down walls (Proverbs 25:28).  Just to give you a little historical context, city walls were the first line of defense against invading armies.   So a city with “broken down walls” was defenseless and easy to conquer.

An angry person is not a powerful person, but one who lacks self control.  And a person who lacks self control is defenseless…easy prey for any temptation that comes along.  We have to stop seeing anger as empowering, and see it for what it is.  You and I are not the Incredible Hulk!  It is NOT everyone else’s responsibility to tip-toe around our feelings for fear that we will become angry.  Self control is OUR responsibility and IT makes us like mighty warriors…self control is what makes us “Incredible!”

I must admit that I didnt think of anger as a means of trying to raise yourself up. I didn’t recognize the power of it until I sat down and really thought about it as you discussed it. Anger really is a dangerous tool used by Satan not only does he set you up with ‘enemies’ that distract he makes you feel good about being ticked off at them. He then turns that around and gives your ‘enemy’ that same good feeling that comes with anger, allowing if not constructing a spiral that ends with utter destruction of something that began so beautiful.

But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. (1 Peter 4:7) Neither anger nor enjoyment, doubt nor confidence, joy nor sorrow shall be any more. These are those which affect the proud, a sober mind has no faculties of judgement.

Yea, God’s word has a way of going against everything that comes natural to us. Only God could make take an anger man (who liked being anger) and make him new again!

Thank you so much for posting this. I have often said that one of the most appealing things about Christianity is that it contradicts what we believe as humans and takes us to a spiritual level that can only be inspired by a close relationship with Jesus.

Again, thank you for all of your posts.
